In Service to the People of God

Through baptism, all the faithful share in the one priesthood of Christ (LG 10). Reflection on the unique priesthood of Christ can help us to come to a deeper understanding of all ministry as service within the priestly people of God and of the priestly vocation of the whole church in service to the world.

Catherine E. Clifford is Professor of Systematic and Historical Theology and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Theology at Saint Paul University, Ottawa. She holds a Ph.D. in theology from the University of St. Michael's College, Toronto, and an S.T.L. from the University of Fribourg, Switzerland. She teaches in the areas of ecclesiology and ecumenism. Her most recent book, co-authored with Richard Gaillardetz, is Key to the Council: Unlocking the Teaching of Vatican II, from Liturgical Press, 2012. Catherine is the founding Director of the Research Centre on Vatican II and 21st Century Catholicism at Saint Paul University.

Rebuilt: Changing Church people from consumers to contributors

Many parishes are struggling at this time to engage their members in the mission of the Church.  In this message, Father Michael White and Tom Corcoran share their own frustration with consumerism in their own parish and share how by God’s grace they have changed consumer Catholics into contributing ones.

Rev. Michael White received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Maryland and his graduate degrees in sacred theology and ecclesiology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. After being ordained a priest of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, he worked for five years as personal secretary to Cardinal William Keeler, who was then archbishop. During that time, he served as the director of the papal visit of Pope John Paul II to Baltimore.

During his tenure as pastor at Church of the Nativity, the parish has almost tripled in weekend attendance from 1,400 to over 4,000. More importantly, the commitment to the mission of the Church has grown, evidenced by the significant increase of giving and service in ministry.

Thomas Corcoran received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Maryland and completed his graduate work in theology with Franciscan University of Steubenville. Corcoran has served the Church of the Nativity in a variety of roles that give him a unique perspective on parish ministry and leadership. Beginning as a youth minister, Corcoran later held positions as coordinator of children’s ministry and director of small groups. He currently serves in the position of associate to the pastor and is responsible for weekend message development, strategic planning, and staff development.

The Winner Takes All: Ministerial Challenges beyond Vatican II—Present & Future

The speaker will describe three emerging challenges for ministers today and for the future.

The first will address “vision and mission” in Ministry.  The second issue will be the challenge of diversity to all.  The third challenge will deal with the need for a ministry of reconciliation and healing of memories.

Dr. Alicia C. Marill, is the Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program and Associate Professor of Theology at Barry University.  She received her B.A. in Social Sciences from Florida Atlantic University, her M.A. in Religious Studies from Barry University and a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Catholic Theological Union in Chicago specializing in cross-cultural ministry.  Her academic research stems from her pastoral concerns: missiology, the ministry of reconciliation and Hispanic Latino Theology.  She has been a catechist, a missioner and a frequent presenter of sessions on reconciling the immigrant experience.
